Colonial Instruments offers custom services such as replacement of missing thumb screws, needle lifting screws, and outkeepers. In all cases, the original thread diameter and threads per inch will be utilized in the replacement pieces. The profile of all screws as well as knurling patterns will be reproduced as close to original manufacturer’s specifications as possible.

We also re-silver compass faces and install old glass (with appropriately aged glazing). Our technique of re-silvering avoids the overpolished sheen of a modern re-silvering technique. Our re-silvered faces will blend smoothly with the patina of the original instrument.

In cases where the original patina has been removed by ill-advised polishing, we have the capabilities of re-patinating the polished instrument (see the before and after pictures on our Staff Adapter page under Restoration Services).
